Kadala(Bengal gram/Brown Chickpeas) Curry

Kadala Curry

                            Kadala curry is a very popular and traditional dish of Kerala. Kadala curry is the best combination for  Puttu .It also  goes well with Appam, Idiyappam,Chapati and Porotta. It is so easy to prepare and tastes great. 


    Ingredients and Measurements Used
    • 1 cup-Brown Channa dal
    • 1 tsp-Ginger(finely chopped)
    • 1tsp -Garlic (finely chopped)
        
    • 2 Medium -Onion (chopped) 
    • 1-2  Green chilli
    • 1-Tomato( chopped)
    • 3/4 cup-Grated coconut 
    • 1/4 tsp-Turmeric powder 
    • 1 tsp-Chilli powder
    • 3 tsp-Coriander powder
    • 1 tsp-Garam Masala Powder
    • Salt needed
    • 2 tsp-Oil 
    • 1 tsp-Mustard seeds 
    • 8-9 Curry leaves
    Preparation


    1. Soak channa dal(Kadala) overnight or for 5-6 hours. 
    2. Cook this until soft ,with a little salt and just enough water.
    3. Heat 1/2 tsp of oil and saute grated coconut on medium flame until it turns golden brown. 
    4. Grind it to a smooth paste.

    Method
    1. Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds when mustard splutters, add ginger ,garlic  and saute until the raw flavor goes.
    2. Then add onions, green chilli ,curry leaves and saute until onions turn light brown.
    3. Add a little salt to the onions to speed up the process.Keep the flame slow.
    4. Now add turmeric powder, chilli powder, coriander powder, salt needed and saute until the raw flavor of the masala powder goes.
    5. Now Add tomatoes and cook until tomatoes become mushy.Keep the flame in Medium
    6. Once the tomato is cooked,add the cooked Channa dal along with the water.
    7. Add the ground coconut paste and cook for a few more minutes. 
    8. When the gravy becomes enough thick, add the garam masala powder and mix well.
    9. Turn off the flame.
    10. Transfer the curry into a serving bowl.
